Michelle's Law, which requires health insurance companies to cover college students who are on medical leave for up to 12 months, has become law! It passed the House on July 30 and the Senate on September 25 and has now been signed by President Bush ...Read the news release.
The law is named in memory of Michelle Morse, a New Hampshire college student diagnosed with colon cancer. Because her family’s health insurance would not cover her if she was not a full-time student, she was forced to take a full class schedule while undergoing chemotherapy. After Michelle passed away, her mother, Society volunteer Ann Marie Morse helped pass Michelle’s Law in her state and been a leader in seeing a federal version enacted.
ACS CAN did its part too. Leading up to the Senate vote, ACS CAN sent an action alert to volunteers in states with targeted Senators. In addition, ACS CAN worked with Colleges Against Cancer to distribute petitions, host student health issue forums, and lobby college presidents to write letters in support of the legislation. In all, several thousand college students and volunteers joined with Michelle’s family to make sure no college student is ever put in the same situation as Michelle.
