U.S. House Passes Revised Tobacco Tax/SCHIP Bill

On Thursday, the U.S. House passed a revised tobacco tax/SCHIP bill. However, it once again fell short of a veto-proof (two-thirds) majority. The Senate is expected to vote on the new measure within the next week.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) helped lead the fight to override President Bush's veto of legislation that has the potential of saving 900,000 lives by increasing the federal tobacco tax. And, we're not going to give up just because we lost this one vote.

This increase will encourage adult smokers to quit; and will prevent a whole generation of our kids from ever starting to smoke. What’s more, it will provide health coverage to low-income children.
